Stefan Cassomenos: Dixit Dominus

(World Premiere)

BHC members were thrilled to participate in the world premiere performance of an exciting new oratorio by Stefan Cassomenos at the 2019 RMP Aria.
A dynamic and spectacular new oratorio inspired by the great oratorios of the baroque in form and structure, the piece was written for soprano and baritone soloists, semi-chorus, choir, chamber orchestra, piano and harpsichord.  This dramatic new setting is as striking as it is thought-provoking. Featuring virtuosic keyboard solos, intense choral writing and a driving rhythmic treatment of the traditional Latin text, the work examines some of the more controversial and contradictory passages contained within the Psalms from the Latin Vulgate and other selected passages of the Bible.
Soloists included the composer Stefan Cassomenos on piano,  who was joined by outstanding contemporary harpsichordist Peter de Jager, soprano Cassandra Wright and baritone Christian Smith. The world premiere was conducted by Andrew Wailes.
Tickets included a free champagne reception at the conclusion of the evening, where audience members had the chance to meet the finalists, adjudicators, orchestra, choir and conductor.

Plenary Hall of the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre

“Our Christmas Gift”

Box Hill Chorale had the pleasure of participating in two spectacular “Our Christmas Gift” concerts at the Plenary Hall of the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre on Saturday. Presented by the Salvation Army, the concerts were a magnificent celebration of Christmas, and an impressive combination of music, words, technology and dramatic elements, all brought together superbly in front of nearly 10,000 patrons.

The 200 voice “Christmas Gift Massed Choir” under the direction of BHC Music Director Andrew Wailes were a central part of the show, and gave fantastic performances in no less than 15 items. The choir featured singers from Box Hill Chorale, The Australian Children’s Choir, the Sydney and Melbourne Staff Songsters, Melbourne University Choral Society, and the Melbourne Contemporary Choir.

The choirs were joined by the magnificent Melbourne Staff Band and Salvo Big Band, who provided fantastic accompaniment to a stellar line up including the one and only Silvie Paladino, and guest soloists including the divine harpist and vocalist Alana Conway, pop sensation Isaiah Firebrace, and the amazing jazz legend James Morrison, who blew the roof off the room with some virtuosic trumpet playing!

They were joined by a huge cast of singers, dancers, acrobats and actors, as well as an amazing cast of live animals. Magnificent horses delivered Silvie Paladino in her “royal” carriage at the start of the show, three majestic camels delivered the Magi, and sheep, goats and even a humble little donkey all featured in the spectacular re-telling of the Christmas story.

It was a huge thrill for Box Hill Chorale’s singers to be part of such an amazing production.

Verdi’s Messa da Requiem

Box Hill Chorale performed the magnificent Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi in association with The Star Chorale and Zelman Symphony Orchestra.

SOLOISTS:

Daria Masiero, soprano

Dominica Matthews, mezzo soprano

Henry Choo, tenor

Joshua Bloom, baritone

Jane Elton-Brown OAM, conductor

Italy’s great hero and poet, Alessandro Manzoni, died in 1873. Verdi, who shared with Manzoni a strong desire for the unification of the Italian states, composed his Requiem for performance in Milan on the first anniversary of Manzoni’s death. Subsequent performances in Paris, London and Vienna received triumphal acclaim and the work’s popularity was assured.

Often described as “Verdi’s greatest opera”, it is an expansive yet tightly-knit musical masterpiece, with melodies and rhythms binding together the various movements into a complete and monumental experience.

The Star Chorale, together with Box Hill Chorale and the Zelman Symphony Orchestra, will be performing this magnificent work at the Melbourne Town Hall, featuring soloists from Opera Australia.

Come and join us for this epic masterpiece!
